Nikwax Cotton Proof Waterproofing is specially designed to be applied to cotton, poly-cotton and canvas articles, and to provide Durable Water Repellency (DWR), maintaining breathability and reducing weight gain in wet conditions.
It is a product that is easy and safe to use, which guarantees an effective result.
The use of articles made of cotton is very common, since it is a biodegradable natural fiber, which is produced in a biological way and can be renewed. It is a strong, breathable and absorbent fabric that is often used to make outdoor clothing and equipment.
Many different fabrics can be produced with cotton, and it can also be mixed with synthetic fabrics such as polyester, to obtain the best qualities of both fabrics.
However, it must be taken into account that cotton is a very absorbent fabric, with a high capacity to retain water, so if it gets wet it will increase its weight, it will take a long time to dry, and breathability will be impeded. Cotton is a fabric that by itself does not repel water, so it is necessary to apply Niwkax Cotton Proof ™ waterproofing to provide Durable Water Repellency (DWR) and prevent the cotton fabric from absorbing water and gaining weight.
If the cotton article is dirty, this dirt can prevent the water from slipping on the fabric, so it should be cleaned with Nikwax Tech Wash®, and in the event that the article is new or has been recently waterproofed, this will suffice. with that cleaning to restore Durable Water Repellency (DWR).
However, with the use of the article over time, the water repellency is lost, so after cleaning with Nikwax Tech Wash®, it is necessary to apply the waterproofing Nikwax Cotton Proof to restore the protection against the Water.
Nikwax Cotton Proof Waterproofing has been specially created to be used on cotton, poly-cotton and canvas, and to achieve a Durable Water Repellency (DWR), while maintaining breathability.

With Nikwax Cotton Proof Waterproofing, it is not necessary to apply heat to the fabric for Durable Water Repellency (DWR) performance to be effective, so there is no need to tumble dry.
There are other waterproofing products on the market but they can be harmful to the user's health and the environment, such as those that use fluorocarbons, or aerosols that are flammable. There are also waterproofing products but they are not specifically designed for cotton garments, and they usually treat the waterproofing only of the outer fabric through a barrier that prevents the entry of water but also prevents breathability.
Nikwax has prioritized reducing the impact on the environment in the use of its products. That is why Nikwax Cotton Proof Waterproofing is a safe-to-use product for cotton outdoor clothing and equipment, it is aqueous, environmentally friendly, safe to use, non-aerosol, non-flammable, free of harmful solvents, volatile organic compounds, and fluorocarbons and environmentally friendly.
Nikwax Cotton Proof Waterproofing is available in two sizes: 300 ml and 1 liter.
This product can be used in the washing machine or by hand.
To use in the washing machine:
- Wash first with Nikwax Tech Wash® detergent. Do not use traditional detergents. For subsequent waterproofing, items may be wet.
- Clean the detergent drawer of the washing machine so that no residue remains.
- Shake the product well before using.
- Follow the instructions on the item's label.
- Put a maximum of 3 clean items in the washing machine.
- Use 50 ml of Nikwax Cotton Proof for each item, 100 ml for 2 items and 150 ml for 3 items.
- Let it dry in the air and if it is done in a tumble dryer, whenever the label of the article allows it and with a delicate program.
To use by hand:
- Wash first with Nikwax Tech Wash® detergent. Do not use traditional detergents.
- Shake the product well before using.
- Follow the instructions on the item's label.
- Wear gloves.
- Put the clean items in 6 liters of hot water.
- Use 50 ml of Nikwax Cotton Proof for each item and 100 ml for 2 items.
- Stir well so that it is soaked in water and the product, wait 5 minutes and stir well again.
- Rinse several times with cold water until the water runs clear.
- Let it dry in the air and if it is done in a tumble dryer, whenever the label of the article allows it and with a delicate program.
To use it in tents, the product must be diluted:
- Wash first with Nikwax Tech Wash® detergent. Do not use traditional detergents. For subsequent waterproofing, items may be wet.
- Shake the pro wellduct before use.
- Wear gloves.
- Protect the work area and place the clean item well spread out or set up the tent.
- Mix well one part of the product with nine parts of water.
- Apply the diluted product on the external tissue evenly. The fabric can be dry or wet. You can use a brush or sponge. Check that the product is impregnated in the fabric, and if the article is very large, do it in areas.
- While applying the product, remove the excess with a damp cloth.
- After several minutes, remove the excess product with a damp cloth.
Stains may form on fabric if excess product is not removed. First it is recommended to apply the product in a non-visible area.
For 3 m² of fabric, it is recommended to use approximately 50 ml of product before diluting it, although it depends on the state of the fabric.
Durable Water Repellency (DWR) is revealed once the fabric is dry.
Items should be stored when completely dry.
To waterproof tents made of synthetic fabrics, Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof® must be used.
